Day 4: Student Handbook-3

Objective: Review key parts of the MHHS student handbook to identify expectations and determine how they connect to the Mustang Way.

Context

Our number one goal is to provide a safe learning environment in which every student can focus on learning and developing relationships. While rules are not always popular they are important as we share our space together to make sure that every student has equal access to learning.

The expectations in the handbook are established to protect 3 main areas of safety:

  • Physical Safety - Everyone is free from physical harm. Structures and systems are in place to prevent danger.
  • Social/Emotional Safety - We work diligently to prevent and protect from harassment, bullying, and personal attack.  We hold a commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, mutual respect and accountability for all.
  • Curricular Safety - We have an on-going, comprehensive learning plan for all as reflected in our mastery based learning document and integrated into the total high school learning experience and culture.  All students have the right to learn free from distraction.

Our beliefs about school culture and safety consistently shape our definition of “The Mustang Way.”

Step 1: Read the following sections of the MHHS Student Handbook Links to an external site.

(Hint: Use the navigation links in the table of contents.)

  • Tardy Policy

  • Dress Code

  • Cars and Parking Permits

  • Closed Campus

  • Food Delivery

  • Selling Food and Merchandise
  • Recording Devices
  • Student ID Policy

  • The Rights and Responsibilities of Students and Teachers

Step 2: Connecting to the Mustang Way

How do the expectations outlined in the handbook provide protections for the 3 types of safety outlined above? How do the expectations connect to the Mustang Way (Respect, Responsibility, Relationships, Rigor, Resilience)? Choose at least two of the values of the Mustang Way and explain how they link to the expectations in the student handbook.

Be prepared to share your thoughts with a partner and the class.
